South Africa's 'please explain' response to Trump's 'shithole' comments

Last week, Trump was widely rebuked after he reportedly referred to Africa and Haiti as "shithole countries" during a heated White House meeting about immigration.

"I want them to come in from everywhere", Trump told reporters.

Trump has not clarified to aides what he said, but told reporters on Sunday night in Florida that comments attributed to him "weren't made".

Trump's comments have sparked widespread condemnation, including from the African Union, and several commentators and writers have accused Trump of racism. Durbin said Trump referred to some African nations as "shithole countries" during that same meeting, on January 9, 2018.

Trump was meeting with lawmakers about a potential deal on immigration last week when he questioned why the U.S. should admit more people from Africa and Haiti.

Morgan said he believes Evanston democrats appreciate Raoul standing up against Trump as a descendent of Haitian immigrants, but it ultimately will not sway anyone's opinion when the group votes to endorse candidates on Sunday.

USA senator Richard Durbin, who was in the White House meeting, said the President had used the term.

When asked about Trump's controversial comments about women, Ivana said that he treated her "fantastic" when they were married. But she says she doesn't "dispute the president was using tough language".

Republican Sens. David Perdue of Georgia and Tom Cotton of Arkansas, who also attended Thursday's meeting, initially said they did not hear Trump utter the word in question, then revised their account to deny he said it at all.

And while multiple lawmakers claim the president made these incendiary comments during a bipartisan meeting on immigration, including Sen.

"And I'm not just talking about what was recently in the news as he described Haiti ... but, other things he has said repeatedly throughout his tenure as both the president and as a candidate", Emanuel said. "I stand behind every word that I said in terms of that meeting", Durbin said.

Rep. Mia Love, R-Utah, the first black female Republican in Congress and the daughter of Haitian immigrants, denounced Trump's comments as racist and called on him to apologize.

"Honestly I don't think the Democrats want to make a deal", Trump said. I also say it as a father who is trying to ... teach his children a certain sense of values.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin speaks during City Year's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Durbin said Monday the White House should release whatever recording it might have of the meeting. "And I'm telling you it's a gross misrepresentation", Perdue said on ABC's "This Week". "We are ready, willing and able to make a deal, but they don't want to".

On Capitol Hill, Democrats and some Republicans denounced Trump's remark as they've tried to reach a deal on immigration, which could be essential to avoiding a government shutdown later this week.
