Steve Bannon set to testify for house intel panel

After headlines trumpeted Bannon's comments in "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House", by author Michael Wolff, Trump said Bannon had "lost his mind" when he lost his White House job.

"Sadly", D'Antonio noted, Wolff's reporting on the "disparaging things the president says about women and his effort to understand the appeal of white supremacy also seem true to the man". Bannon has since said in a statement that he continues to support the president.

Updated | Steve Bannon, President Donald Trump's embattled former chief strategist, has agreed to an interview with the House Intelligence Committee as part of its probe into Russia's election meddling and links to the Trump campaign, according to one source close to the committee and a second source with knowledge of the matter.

"If he was unfit, he probably wouldn't be sitting there and wouldn't have defeated the most qualified group of candidates the Republican Party has ever seen, " she said, calling him "an incredibly strong and good leader".

Bannon, who left his post at the White House in August, confirmed this week that he is leaving his post at the conservative website Breitbart News. Bannon, a former Goldman Sachs banker turned economic nationalist who boasted about making Breitbart into a platform for the alt-right and was yearning for a revolution in Washington, met Trump, a real estate mogul with the biggest aspirations for himself, but devoid of any sort of coherent political worldview beyond a vague winner-take-all mentality.

He is quoted as saying that Trump Jr. committed treason by his dealing with the Russians and that Ivanka was stupid as a brick.

But since Trump's surprising election victory Bannon's star was already beginning to shine too brightly for a president who craves the limelight.

The New York Times reports that Bannon's departure was forced by Rebekah Mercer, a Republican megadonor whose investment in Breitbart gave her a seat on the board.
