Teens Who Vape Likely to Try Cigarettes, Study Finds

THURSDAY, Jan. 4, 2018 (HealthDay News) - Non-cigarette tobacco use is associated with subsequent cigarette smoking among US adolescents, according to a study published online Jan. 2 in JAMA Pediatrics. Ramirez co-chairs the UT Health SA Eliminate Tobacco Use Committee and directs the Institute for Health Promotion Research in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at UT Health SA. Health experts in Britain view e-cigarettes as a crucial tool in the fight against tobacco, and past year Public Health England even endorsed the devices.

"The first wave of the [Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health] study did not ask adolescents whether or not the e-cigarettes that they used contained nicotine, but taking all kinds of e-cigarettes together, the increase in risk of future smoking was about the same as the risk associated with use of cigars and other combustibles", he told The Times.

People who received drug therapy at hospitals were more likely to quit smoking than those who did not see physicians, the study showed.

About 90 percent of adult smokers first tried cigarettes by the time they turned 18, according to the study. Ultimately, lower engagement could mitigate the future population burden of tobacco use by reducing the number of adolescents who initiate tobacco use and increasing the number who quit.

None of the participants had ever smoked traditional cigarettes prior to the start of the study.

Bottom Line: The use of electronic cigarettes, hookahs, noncigarette combustible tobacco or smokeless tobacco by adolescents were each associated with starting to smoke conventional cigarettes within a year. But new a new line of research conducted by investigators at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) suggests many of these adolescents will eventually move on to smoke real cigarettes. "And even if kids use these products and don't convert to cigarette smoking, it's not the only relevant health concern". The results were adjusted for factors like sociodemographic and environmental smoking risk.

He added that the clear potential of e-cigarettes and other emerging non-combustible tobacco products to addict teens to nicotine has to be part of the regulatory debate, noting that once teens are addicted, smoking cigarettes may appeal to them as a cheaper, more convenient and more effective method for delivering nicotine.

And in another report released Tuesday, researchers said that almost 3 million American teens had been exposed to online marketing of tobacco, as cigarette manufacturers have shifted their marketing strategies from traditional forms of media to the internet.

"In policy terms, the findings provide a rationale to treat alternative cigarette products as a group and potentially extend policies that work for one product to others (such as a ban on flavorings)", they wrote.

"I'm perhaps surprised about how similar the relationships were for each product across the board", Watkins said.

Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky President Ben Chandler said these products basically fall into the same camp as cigarettes because both lead to future cigarette use.
