Trump says he would 'absolutely' talk to Kim Jong

Trump said he would be willing to speak directly with Kim, but doubled down on his tough talk against North Korea's communist leader.

The two sides will meet face-to-face for talks on Tuesday at the Panmunjom truce village to sort out North Korea's participation in the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea.

President Donald Trump and his South Korean counterpart, Moon Jae-in, announced Thursday that annual large-scale military drills would now take place after the Olympics.

He said the USA would get involved "at the appropriate time".

He told reporters Friday that Japan will "take all steps necessary", including cooperating with China and Russian Federation, to step up pressure on North Korea so it will give up its nuclear weapons and missile development policies.

North Korea agreed on Friday to hold official talks with South Korea next week.

"Look, right now they're talking Olympics".

"The two leaders agreed to de-conflict the Olympics and our military exercises so that United States and Republic of Korea forces can focus on ensuring the security of the Games", the White House said in a statement.

For most of past year, it looked like the United States and North Korea were careening toward a potentially catastrophic war, a conflict that would've also involved South Korea.

He added that if something could come out of the talks, "that would be a great thing for all of humanity".

They may not mix, but that doesn't stop them from being frequently tossed into a blender anyway. "North Korea can talk with anyone they want, but the USA is not going to recognize it or acknowledge it until they agree to ban the nuclear weapons that they have", Haley told reporters in NY on Tuesday.

Ambassador Nikki Haley defended Trump's bombastic approach to North Korea - including a tweet last week where he taunted Kim that "I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!"

"This isn't going to happen overnight, as we've seen".

North Korea's official news agency has urged practical action in order to improve ties between the two Koreas in an editorial on Sunday, ahead of the first meeting between the two countries in more than two years.

The respective delegations are expected to discuss North Korean participation in the Winter Olympics - to be held in February in the South Korean county of PyeongChang - and other ways to improve bilateral ties.

Japan's defence minister said his country would remain vigilant, adding that the North went through "phases of apparent dialogue and provocation" and would continue its weapons programme.
