Versace's Murder Highlighted in Season Two of American Crime Story

The 52-year-old writers comments come after the Versace family issued a statement criticising FXs new mini-series, which explores the assassination of the renowned Italian designer.

If Federico Fellini had ever visited South Beach, the result might have been something like The Assassination Of Gianni Versace-a long, horrified gaze at the corrupting effect of celebrity, not just on those who possess it, but on the culture in which they dwell.

The show was based on the book Vulgar Favors, a best-seller by Maureen Orth.

Ryan Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Alexis Martin Woodall, Tom Rob Smith, Dan Minahan, Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski are Executive Producers of The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.

Its follow-up chronicles the events surrounding Versace's murder, as played by Edgar Ramírez (The Girl On The Train, the Point Break remake), at the hands of Andrew Cunanan who will be portrayed by Glee alum Darren Criss.

The Versace company "did not authorise and was not involved in the television series", it said in a statement on Monday.

This series is a stand-alone second instalment of American Crime Story which airs on January 16 on FX, follows the life and death of fashion designer Gianni Versace, who at the height of his career was killed by a serial killer Andrew Cunanan in front of his mansion. "We stand by the meticulous reporting of Ms. Orth". "Instead, in her effort to create a sensational story, she presents second-hand hearsay that is full of contradictions", the family claims.

The family challenges in particular Orth's claim that Versace was HIV-positive. "Since Versace did not authorize the book on which it is partly based nor has it taken part in the writing of the screenplay, this TV series should only be considered as a work of fiction".

"Gianni Versace was a fearless and honest man, who engaged in humanitarian work for the benefit of others", stated the company. "Of all the possible portrayals of his life and legacy, it is sad and reprehensible that the producers have chosen to present the distorted and bogus version created by Maureen Orth". The Versace family let the audience know that the upcoming series was not made or even conceived with their input and that it may even be in direct opposition to the real-life facts of the case.
