'We feel betrayed' says Pakistani Army on USA move to cut aid

Votel also told Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa that the USA was "not contemplating any unilateral action inside Pakistan", but seeking its cooperation to capture militants based on Pakistani soil who carry out attacks in Afghanistan, the Pakistani statement said.

Speaking to the US CENTCOM commander Gen. Joseph Votel, the Pakistani Army Chief said "Pakistan is fully aware of US concerns on activities of Afghan nationals in Pakistan and we are already undertaking multiple actions through Operation "Radd ul Fasaad" to deny any residual capacity to terrorists of all hue and colour for which return of Afghan Refugees is an essential prerequisite".

Ghafoor did not state exactly when the conversation took place, saying the call was made to Bajwa earlier this week.

Tension between the United States and Pakistan has grown over us complaints that the Afghan Taliban and Haqqani network that target American troops in Afghanistan are allowed to take shelter on Pakistani soil.

The Pakistani military said both Votel and an unnamed US senator phoned Bajwa to discuss security cooperation "over the week".

"Even the USA ambassador", who was summoned for a meeting at Pakistan's Foreign Ministry after Trump's New Year's Day tweets, "didn't have an explanation for the tweet for the first couple of days", the official said.

It said both generals spoke of the need for continued cooperation in the war on terror. This view, he felt, was undermining in Washington, Pakistan's contributions in the war against terrorism.

Pakistan has been a key ally of the United States in war on terror since the September 11, 2001 attacks in the US, but relations have been strained between the two sides since Trump accused Islamabad of harboring terrorists.

Bajwa responded that Pakistan is fully aware of concerns laid out by the U.S. in relation to the terrorist activities of Afghan nationals in Pakistan, and his country is already engaged in several operations against those militants, AP reports.

Votel, who spoke to General Qamar Javed Bajwa by telephone "over the week", also said that the "on-going turbulence" around a tweet by Donald Trump suspending aid to the country was "a temporary phase", according to the statement. COAS further said that Pakistan will keep supporting all initiatives for peace in Afghanistan despite the tendency to scapegoat Pakistan, as peace in Afghanistan is the only way to move towards enduring peace and stability in the region.

Pakistan later responded to Trump's allegations by convening a National Security Committee meeting, attended by Bajwa and Pakistan's Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. The committee at the time said that the USA was scapegoating Pakistan for its own failure to bring peace to Afghanistan after 16 years of war.
