West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee is now 'Doctor'

Journalists accompanying West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on her trip to London in November past year were caught stealing silverware at an official dinner in a city hotel, media reports have claimed.

State Advocate General Kishore Dutta had told a division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice J Bhattacharya and Justice Arijit Banerjee that the decision to confer the honorary degree was taken by the syndicate and senate of the university and there was no sufferance of public interest.

The honorary Doctorate of Literature (DLitt) degree was conferred on her for by governor and chancellor Keshari Nath Tripathi for her contribution to art, culture and social welfare.

The controversy has resulted because she was the first serving chief minister of West Bengal to be given the degree.

They are Bidhan Chandra Roy, who received it in 1944, eight years before he became chief minister, and Jyoti Basu in 2007, nearly eight years after he left his job.

Banerjee said it was a great honour for her but she is not going to use the degree.

"But my education minister, Parthada, coaxed me to come here". But I am proud that the senate has found me eligible. "You have honoured me and I feel deeply humbled".

"It's not only most unethical, but against the basic principle and values of such an old university".

VC of North Bengal University has filed a PIL against the plans of Calcutta University.

However, the AG said there was no bar on awarding the honorary degree to an incumbent chief minister, and submitted that Pranab Mukherjee was conferred the degree when he was the president of the country.

The PIL says it is improper for a state-funded university to confer such degrees on a person who can influence its decisions.
