Worldwide PC shipments continue their decline, down 2% in Q4

Worldwide PC shipments continue their decline, down 2% in Q4

For the fourth consecutive quarter, Lenovo, in second place, experienced a decline in shipments, with shipments down 0.7 percent, though its market lifted somewhat to 22 percent from 21.7 percent.

Gartner, however, forecasts continued struggles for the market, with principal analyst Mikako Kitagawa saying: "The PC will become a more specialized, purpose-driven device".

In terms of geography, the Asia/Pacific and Latin America regions saw positive growth for PC shipments in 2017, while Europe, the Middle East, and Africa held steady, and the U.S. saw declines, according to the report.

Chinese high-tech giant Lenovo lost further ground to worldwide PC leader HP in the final quarter of a year ago, as it struggles in the face of a globally sluggish market and lack of traction for its newer mobile devices, according to new data released on Friday.

Overall, total PC shipments for the fourth quarter of 2017 stood at 16.5 million units.

Lenovo Group Ltd. shipped 15.7 million PCs in the last three months of 2017, unchanged from a year earlier, according to data tracking firm IDC.

The company said that the U.S. PC market remained a tough one due to competition from mobile devices. PC buyers will look for quality and functionality rather than looking for the lowest price, which will increase PC average selling prices (ASPs) and improve profitability in the long run.

The company unveiled a number of new PCs ahead of a major consumer electronics show in Las Vegas this week, though it was far more muted in the smartphone arena.

According to a new report from market tracker IDC, shipments of new PCs rose in Q4 2017 by 0.7% from Q4 of 2016, beating the forecast of a decline of 1.7%.

Dell's shipments grew slightly in the fourth quarter of 2017. The consumer market stabilized with fourth-quarter online promotions in many countries, which drove demand for gaming PCs and thin and light notebooks.

For the year, worldwide PC shipments totalled 262.5 million units in 2017, a 2.8 percent decrease from 2016 (see Table 3).

By region, The United States saw a decline in PC shipments, including a drop in both desktop and notebook sales.

What the companies do agree on is the top four worldwide PC vendors in 2017.

Asustek Computer and Acer finished the fourth quarter in a statistical tie for the fifth position.

"The top vendors have taken advantage of their volume operations to lower production costs, pushing small to midsize vendors out of the market", Kitagawa said. "Enticed by a growing array of products that promise all-day battery life, high portability, and address emerging use cases that require more compute power, pockets of the consumer base are taking a serious look at these revamped PCs".

In conjunction with the Q4 figures released by the two companies, they also posted complete 2017 PC performance sales figures, with both noting overall declines.
