Chabahar port project to feature during Rouhani's tour of India

President Rouhani will be accorded a ceremonial reception on February 17.

The External Affairs Ministry had said earlier that during the visit of the president of Iran, both sides would review the progress achieved in bilateral relations and also exchange views on regional and worldwide issues of mutual interest.

The Iranian Prez is likely to visit historic sites in Hyderabad, including the Qutub Shahi Tombs at Golconda, before leaving for New Delhi. This is the second time Rouhani will be visiting Hyderabad, but it is his first visit after assuming charge as the president.

Iran will also be pitching for greater investment by India in Iran.

In New Delhi, the Irani head of state is slated to meet the EAM (External Affairs Minister) Sushma Swaraj, PM Modi and Indian President Ram Nath Kovind and hold bilateral talks.

The President of Iran will visit the Grand Makkah Masjid in Hyderabad where he will offer Friday prayers and later address the weekly congregation.

Based on the agreement India has pledged to invest $85 million in equipment of Chabahar port which opens up the transit route for the country to Iran and Afghanistan, bypassing Pakistan.

Several high-ranking Iranian officials including Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Minister of Petroleum Bijan Zanganeh, Minister of Road and Urban Development Abbas Akhundi, Minister of Industry, Mines and Trade Mohammad Shariatmadari and Chief of staff of Iran's President Mahmoud Vaezi are accompanying President Rouhani during his three-day visit to India.

He is also scheduled to visit the Salar Jung Museum tomorrow.

The first phase of the port was inaugurated by President Rouhani in December past year, a little over a month after the first consignment of wheat from India to Afghanistan was sent via this facility.

Rouhani added Iran's Chabahar Port as well as connection to Afghanistan and Central Asia is highly significant for India.
