The number of flu deaths continues to rise in our state.

"With 97 total deaths so far this season, I can not stress enough that if you have not received a flu shot yet, for your own health and to protect the health of those around you, please get a flu shot".

State health officials said 23 more people have died from the flu in SC.

Of the 97 who have died, 78 were over the age of 65.

Last season, 218 people died from influenza.

North Carolina health officials will release their latest flu numbers Thursday. "This is the deadliest season since 2009 when flu became a reportable disease to the State", Pino said.

It remains unclear how the initial tweet was issued.

Those anxious about the flu or feel that might be at risk, should speak with their doctor about getting the flu shot or other preventative measures.
