Jury Convicts Elite Baltimore Task Force On Federal Corruption Charges

Taylor was accused of participating in a robbery in which he stole $100,000 under the semblance of it being police duty.

The two rogue detectives are now staring at a prison sentence of up to 60 years.

Shortly after the verdict was read, Acting Baltimore Police Commissioner Darryl De Sousa said in a statement that the department was moving to terminate the employment of both officers, who have been been suspended without pay since they were indicted in March of past year. Each of these initiatives represent our commitment to changing the culture and practices of our police force, creating the necessary dialogue and collaboration between citizens, community leaders and officers, and making clear that honor, integrity, empathy and service are the non-negotiables of any person granted the privilege of wearing a police uniform and badge on the streets of Baltimore. They detailed acts of astonishing police criminality, including armed home invasions, stretching back to 2008.

"We recognize that this indictment and subsequent trial uncovered some of the most egregious and despicable acts ever perpetrated in law enforcement", DeSousa said.

Hersl's lead lawyer, said that the Hersl family was disappointed in the verdict but noted that the jury "did acquit him of one of the more serious crimes". But when the cops are found doing it, we face the prospect of damaging the social contract which makes law and order possible. They were found not guilty of using a firearm in the commission of a crime.

Mr. Taylor's defense team and his relatives did not immediately speak to reporters after the verdict.

Ward said when the task force was out patrolling, Sgt. Wayne Jenkins - who also pleaded guilty - would quickly drive toward a group of people, notably those who were carrying backpacks (as according to them, why would anyone need a backpack but to transport illicit items), pop open their doors and would chase after those who were caught off guard and took off running.

Sherrilyn Ifill, president of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, said in a statement that the trial exposed the city's inability to weed out corruption that lasted almost a decade, and "affirmed the gross misconduct that communities have complained of for years" but weren't believed.

Former colleagues said Jenkins' sledgehammer approach to policing extended to having actual sledgehammers — along with crowbars, grappling hooks, black masks and even a machete — stored in his police-issued auto to ramp up illegal activities. Four of those officers had testified against Hersl and Taylor for the federal government in recent weeks.

Schenning said he was thankful the jurors saw through that. "They thought if you robbed drug dealers they have no place to go".

Purpura did not deny that his 48-year-old client took money but said the thefts didn't rise to the more serious charges of robbery or extortion.
