Microsoft Ships the First Redstone 5 Build, Launches Windows App Previews

Also, the team noted that if you're already enrolled in the Skip Ahead portion of the Fast ring, you don't have to worry, as you're already receiving app previews, so this is really opening up this availability to even more people. Meanwhile, do hit up Windows Update if you are on the Insider Preview program and let us know if you do find any performance gains when enabling Ultimate Performance.

The Verge reports that this feature is also limited to machines running Windows 10 Pro For Workstations, again whittling down its availability.

Microsoft is making it simple for anybody to test upcoming versions of Windows apps via the Windows Insider program.

Insiders will be able to opt into previews for Feedback Hub, Microsoft Photos, Microsoft Sticky Notes, Microsoft Tips, Paint 3D, Windows Alarms & Clock, Windows Calculator, Windows Camera, Windows Mixed Reality Viewer and Windows Voice Recorder. According to Microsoft, the following apps will be in the first-wave of the program, with previews rolling out in the next few days.

"This new policy builds on the current High-Performance policy, and it goes a step further to eliminate micro-latencies associated with fine grained power management techniques", explains Windows Insider chief Dona Sarkar.

That's where the Windows App Preview Program comes in. Not all the apps will be the latest preview versions.

This initial preview build of Redstone 5 includes no noteworthy new features or changes over the Redstone 4 build, which is to be expected as development on Redstone 5 has not long started.

Apart from that, the new Windows 10 Insider Build will also come with updated emoji designs, improved control on file access permissions for Universal Windows Programs, and a number of bug fixes and performance improvements as usual. If you want to leave the preview program, you can do that from the app's Settings or about page and click the "Leave preview" button. This means that Ultimate Performance won't be available for battery powered systems and will only be available to users of the specific Windows 10 Pro for Workstations operating system.
