North Carolina Toddler Killed Riding in Ambulance Hit by Illegal Alien

The ambulance and Romero's auto were both heading south on USA 52 when investigators say the vehicle hit the left side of the medical transport, causing both drivers to lose control.

Romero was charged Sunday with driving while impaired, failure to reduce speed and having no operator's license, police said.

Romero was also in the country illegally, the station reported.

Police said that both the Honda Accord and the ambulance were traveling south when the Accord collided with the left side of the ambulance, causing both drivers to lose control.

The Winston-Salem Police Department says they were informed at 6:05pm on Monday that the three-year-old boy had died at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

EMS rushed the baby, the mother and two paramedics inside the ambulance to the hospital. The others are expected to be OK.

Gary Oakes of Wise, Virginia, said in a brief phone interview Monday that his grandson had been under medical care before the crash but didn't want to elaborate.

A police spokesman told the paper Romero and a passenger in the Honda, Andres Leon, 33, fled after the crash. He was being held without bail after bail had been set and then revoked. Federal authorities also put Romero under an immigration detainer. The detainer will allow U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agents to take Romero into custody once he is released from local custody. He was given a $1,000 bond and Forsyth County Jail officials say he was not in the jail as of Sunday night.

Court documents give more details about what happened after the crash.

Jose Duran Romero, 27, blew a 0.19 on a breathalyzer almost two hours after the crash, more than twice the legal limit, FOX8 Winston-Salem reported late Monday. He had "bloodshot, glassy eyes", "slurred speech" and looked "grossly impaired".

Court documents show the driver accused of crashing into the ambulance in North Carolina on Sunday was extremely under the influence.

Romero and Leon are scheduled to appear in Forsyth District Court on April 17.
