The medals have all been handed out and the 2018 Winter Olympics from Pyeongchang, South Korea are a wrap. In some cases, they even lost the medal they had won here.

Was it too much to dream that an earnest, unified Korean women's hockey team and a delightful North Korean pairs figure-skating team could help bring the two Koreas closer, perhaps someday bringing peace or even unification to the peninsula?

Snowboarder Zoi Sadowski-Synnott, 16, carried the flag after being bestowed the honour for ending the country's 26-year Winter Olympic medal drought.

The PyeongChang Olympics have ended with a spectacular closing ceremony that once again saw athletes from North and South Korea marching together.

Marit Bjoergen won her nation's 14th gold medal, good enough to tie the Germans, who had taken the top spot in the four-man bobsled competition and fell just short in the men's hockey final, losing to the Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation.

Following tonight's ceremony, you're going to be waiting for quite a long time in order to see the another Olympics broadcast on NBC - think in terms of the summer of 2020, when the next set of events will take place in Tokyo.

Winter Olympics legend Marit Bjoergen won the final gold of Pyeongchang in the women's 30km cross country yesterday, putting Norway top of the table over Germany, on overall medals won.

Meanwhile, the Under Armour ski racer, who won the bronze medal for her final downhill alpine appearance, wore Polo Ralph Lauren mountain boots for the occasion.

Medal favourites and Olympic veterans David Morris and Lydia Lassila had high expectations, but were unable to achieve back-to-back Olympic medal wins. Great Britain won five medals, its most ever at a Winter Games.

- NATHAN CHEN: The two-time US figure skating champion was among the pre-Olympic favorites, but ruined his chances for making the podium with a dismal short program. So they didn't march under the Russian flag.

How do athletes deal with the pressure of the Olympics?

It's been an eventful two weeks for Taufatofua, who competed as a cross-country skier.

It was the ideal, and somehow movingly accurate backdrop offered to the much smaller group of athletes who participated in the closing ceremonies.

Nevertheless, the ceremony missed an opportunity to put right some of the wrongs of the 2014 games in Sochi, when dozens of Russians were awarded medals but were subsequently stripped of them for doping. It began with a magnanimous gesture to a bitter enemy, and ended with a farewell show so optimistic it made the sight of the International Olympic Committee president creating a heart with his hands alongside volunteers and athletes seem genuine. The group, which included his wife Maja and his coach William Raine, was stopped by police shortly after midnight Saturday near the village. As a result, Australia failed to win a medal in the Winter Olympic sport it has been most successful in: aerial skiing.
