South Africa opposition EFF says will boycott election of new president

As a disciplined member of the ANC, Zuma should hand in his resignation to the speaker of Parliament, the foundation said.

Malema continued: "The constitutional court found that this parliament did not play its role, particularly when it came to holding Zuma accountable".

He said: "We are going to join the DA motion on the dissolution".

He said the EFF "at the first opportunity to lead a motion in Parliament, EFF will call on the dissolution of Parliament in favour of early elections".

"Furthermore‚ opposition parties should not be opportunistic and field candidates for position of President because none won elections and even when combined‚ do not constitute more than 50% of the vote. We want to deal with the problems of corruption in state institutions and government and we want to focus on building the economy", said Mashatile.

Malema, a former staunch ally responsible for Zuma's ascent to power, blamed Zuma for a whole host of things from state capture, to Marikana, Life Esidimeni, the Sassa debacle and more.

Ramaphosa was elected ANC president in December and replaced Jacob Zuma, who resigned in a live address to the nation on Wednesday night.

"This parliament failed to discharge its responsibilities, and if anyone wants to be president of South Africa, let's go to the elections, let's get a new mandate". We will continue to be ever vigilant and hold government to account‚ and ensure we never again allow the rot to set it until it becomes too late. We can not continue to be in a state of limbo, we need to bring certainty that, yes we are now on course, and government and parliament are working. If the masses say "we love you with your constitutional violations, go back", we will come back.

Despite not partaking in the election of the new South African president, Malema said they would be present at the state of the nation address on Friday and would engage robustly.

On Wednesday, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Lechesa Tsenoli also informed DA leader Mmusi Maimane that the motion to dissolve Parliament that the DA has tabled could be addressed at a meeting on Thursday.
