"American Idol" Returned to Television and Viewers Were NOT Happy About It

The premiere numbers do, however, trail the 3.0 rating and 10.96 million viewers drawn by the previous "Idol" season premiere. And now, with their golden tickets in hand, both Turner and Lorenzo are headed to Hollywood! He performed "Stay" as his audition and received unanimous approval from judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan to advance to the next stage of competition. Lionel was "fascinated" by her brain. The judges were afraid the music industry would eat sweet Layla alive and that she'd be "going into the fire", but they all said "yes" after realizing Layla was strong mentally and had confidence in herself. It's no secret millions tuned in to the original series to see what type of comedic entertainment in the form of a Hollywood hopeful would grace the judges with an unforgettable moment.

She said she has hopes of bringing the show back to life and to give hope to other aspiring singers.

The other showcased contestants from NY include Maddie Poppe, who sings The Muppet Movie song "Rainbow Connection", and gets three yeses for her "storyteller voice"; and Koby, a 26-year-old musical theater performer from Denver, who belts perhaps the longest, loudest vocal run in Idol history. Country hitmaker Luke finds the performance "pretty daggum inspiring", but Lionel and Katy initially aren't hearing Ron's own personality shine through.

Noah Davis brought his love of alpacas and his wig-based lexicon to his audition.

More American Idol auditions continue tonight on ABC. I can see her belting it out on the Idol stage, but her audition proved that she can showcase her big voice without letting it get out of control; that's key.

But the guitar wasn't his only musical talent; he could also sing. Before she splits, Koby deems the judges to be "dumbasses" and quips, "I think Katy is just a little jealous".

A quick trip back to NY, and it's a "yes" for 16-year-old Zach Denofrio, who has a high-pitched speaking voice but turns into a Frank Sinatra-type crooner when he sings.

Alyssa, a 15-year-old high school student Orlando, FL, sang "Almost Is Never Enough" by Ariana Grande featuring Nathan Sykes.
