Barack Obama in talks to create 'inspirational' shows for Netflix

News of the pending deal follows several big tie-ups between Netflix and some Hollywood heavy-hitters - including a $100 million agreement with Scandal and Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes, and a $300 million dollar, five-year deal with Glee and American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy.

One of the next places you see Barack Obama could be on Netflix.

The type of content that the Obamas are expected to bring to the streaming service hasn't been announced yet in terms of the number of series' or episodes.

Last year, Penguin Random House landed a deal to publish two books by Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, with one volume to be written by each.

A deal between Netflix and the Obamas would be huge for the streaming service.

Obama senior adviser Eric Schultz, in a statement provided toThe Associated Press, said the Obamas believe in the power of storytelling to inspire.

More than half of those are outside the United States. Throughout their lives, they have lifted up stories of people whose efforts to make a difference are quietly changing the world for the better.

The streaming service's mix of original drama, films and other programming has proved popular globally, with subscriber numbers reaching almost 118 million at the end of 2017.

While details surrounding the projects are yet to be confirmed, The New York Times reports that they would provide the couple with a platform to tell "inspirational stories" to Netflix's millions of global subscribers.

Those topics comprise portions of the legislative agenda he exercised during his time in the White House - many of which President Donald Trump has sought to roll back since he took office.

Barack Obama appears to be going from former president to program producer and is reportedly in "advanced negotiations" with Netflix to create a series of new shows for the streaming giant.
