Chiefs set to sign Sammy Watkins

Chiefs set to sign Sammy Watkins

Watkins recorded 39 catches for 593 yards and eight touchdowns in what turned out to be his lone season in Los Angeles.

In dire need of wide receiver help, the Bears have declared Watkins as their No. 1 target, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.

The signing can not be made official until free agency opens at 9pm (GMT) on Wednesday.

Sammy Watkins scores eight touchdowns for the Rams last season. Watkins had only one 100-yard game and had only one other game in which he topped 70 yards.

The Rams had considered using the franchise tag on Watkins, but opted instead to tag safety Lamarcus Joyner.

Now, Watkins joins an offense that already has plenty of big-play potential.

The first two years of Watkins' career in Buffalo were promising. He was going to get paid in free agency and it was also possible he would take a shorter deal with a young quarterback in order to set himself up for free agency again at the age of 27.

The top two receivers on the free-agent market are off the board.

However, it seems the Colts were looking to add the 24-year-old playmaker and were reportedly "in the final mix" for Watkins, per ESPN's Dianna Russini, before he chose the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Rams must re-sign or replace players such as center John Sullivan and nickelback Nickell Robey-Coleman, and likely will attempt to build depth at linebacker and on their offensive line.
