Conservative commentator Kudlow a contender to replace Cohn

President Donald Trump told people Monday that he has settled on Larry Kudlow to replace Gary Cohn as the new director of the White House's National Economic Council, according to a source familiar with his conversations.

After reportedly penning several resignation letters after the president blamed "both sides" for terrorist attacks conducted by white supremacists past year, Cohn stayed at the White House to shepherd tax reform.

Mr. Kudlow declined to comment. Trump did note Kudlow supported his approach to using trade tariffs in economic negotiations.

The president signed an executive order earlier this month to enact a 25% tariff on steel and a 10% tariff on aluminum imports, which has ignited controversy within the Republican Party.

That's according to reports Saturday that fingers Liddell as the likely next head of the National Economic Council, the policymaking advisory body that is now led by Gary Cohn. "We agree on most", Trump said. "I'm looking at Larry Kudlow very strongly", Trump said on Tuesday when asked about Cohn's potential replacement.

A financial columnist who served in former president Ronald Reagan's administration, Kudlow was in the running for the director role while advising Trump's transition team. He also acted as an informal adviser to Trump during his 2016 presidential campaign.

"I think Larry has a very good chance", Trump said.

During his sendoff to Cohn, Trump mentioned the dispute over tariffs, saying Cohn "is not quite as strong on those tariffs as we want".

He did, however, float the possibility of Cohn returning to the White House in a different capacity.
