Dating app Bumble banning gun images following mass shootings

Bumble, the popular dating app, released a statement Monday saying the app will remove any and all photos containing guns.

The Los Angeles Clippers have announced a multiyear pact to feature the logo of Austin-based social networking company Bumble on the team's jerseys starting tonight with the team's matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans. The app said it would make exceptions for members of the military or law enforcement who are in uniform.

"Online behavior can both mirror and predict how people treat each other in the real world", the statement reads.

Bumble is reportedly using a team of 5,000 contracted content moderators to weed out the newly prohibited images for its almost 30 million users, but won't censor photos in users' Instagram feeds. Bumble holds its users accountable for their actions and has zero tolerance for hate, aggression, or bullying.

"We just want to create a community where people feel at ease, where they do not feel threatened, and we just don't see guns fitting into that equation", Bumble's founder and chief executive Whitney Wolfe Herd told the New York Times.

The NRA, the nation's most powerful gun rights group, has repeatedly dismissed calls for greater control that arose after a school shooting in Parkland, Florida, left 17 people dead.

"This is not super black and white", she said.

Bumble is also making a $100,000 donation to March For Our Lives, the anti-gun violence event/organization started by Parkland student survivors. "Soon after I knew my daughter survived her shooting, I used it every single day in my conversations with the kids and just went out there to talk to whomever I could about it", she said. We stand with the courageous Parkland survivors, and join them in working towards a non-violent future. "But if we are going a step further and building joint experiences with our sponsors that allow us to bring alive what we do and they do, you can't do better than that".
