Eagles To Sign DT Haloti Ngata

Eagles To Sign DT Haloti Ngata

Now, the Eagles are going to sign former Broncos linebacker Corey Nelson to a one-year deal on Wednesday, a league source confirmed to NBC Sports Philadelphia.

The Eagles are adding defensive end Michael Bennett via trade with the Seattle Seahawks and already feature a deep and talented line, including interior pass rusher Fletcher Cox.

The year prior, Ngata played just 51.31 percent of the Lions' total defensive snaps-down from a mark of 57 percent in 2015, per Pro Football Reference.

After being selected in the seventh round in 2014, Nelson played in 53 games over the last four seasons with 62 total tackles and one sack.

Ngata, 34, had similar injury problems while with the Detroit Lions in 2017. He had two sacks in those games, however.

He was a large part of Detroit's run defense the past three years and served as a mentor to younger defensive linemen, including A'Shawn Robinson and Akeem Spence. He started the first five games of the season, but suffered a torn biceps in Week 5 and finished the season on injured reserve.

In January, Ngata told 97.1 FM in Detroit that he wanted to play in 2018.

That said, Ngata can still be a solid early-down gap-clogger who specializes in stuffing the run.

The No. 12 overall pick by the Ravens in the 2006 draft, Ngata spent nine years with Baltimore, being named AP first-team All-Pro twice and making five Pro Bowls. While Philly gets to sign an accomplished defensive tackle without much risk, Ngata gets a chance to truly chase another Super Bowl championship.
