Karti Chidambaram Sent to Jail

Karti Chidambaram Sent to Jail

The court noted the submission of Karti's counsel that he was the son of former union finance and home minister P Chidambaram, now a member of Rajya Sabha who had dealt with various stringent penal laws such as TADA, MCOCA, UAPA and NDPS. The special CBI court acknowledged that the accused is a son of a former union minister, however it said that his "social status" can not be the basis of providing him any special facility like a separate jail. On March 9, a Delhi court had sent him to CBI custody for three days. However, the judge directed Tihar Jail authorities to provide and ensure proper safety and security to Karti during the judicial custody.

"However, only keeping in view the fact of social status of accused and his father, he can not be treated different from other accused persons and can not be allowed to be kept in separate prison".

The son of former Union minister P Chidambaram has been in the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation since his arrest from Chennai airport on February 28. The CBI said Karti remained "evasive" and "non-cooperative" during interrogation and sought 15 days judicial custody.

News18 reported that Karti's counsel Dayan Krishan moved an application in a Delhi court seeking a separate jail cell, and stated that since P Chidambaram had taken charge as a home minister "just after 26/11 Mumbai attacks and had several accused under MCOCA prosecuted, there is an indisputable threat to his life at Tihar jail".

CBI counsel V K Sharma opposed the application for a separate cell and bathroom saying there was no threat to Karti.

"CBI opposing a separate prison, gives me further apprehension and shows political motive and enhances my threat perception". Today the CBI would appraise the court about the fresh details that have cropped up following the questioning of Karti's chartered accountant, Bhaskararaman.

The court, however, allowed Karti to carry spectacles and medicines as per prescription subject to examination and approval by the jail doctor, but denied his request to carry toiletries, books, clothes and home food. The court is likely to hear the CBI matter on March 19.

Earlier on March 10, the Delhi High Court restrained the Enforcement Directorate (ED) from arresting Karti Chidambaram till March 20.

After confirming that she had paid a bribe to Karti Chidambaram in the INX Media case, Indrani Mukerjea has now agreed to identify the location too.
