Nepal's first woman president wins second term

Nepal's first woman president, Bidhya Devi Bhandari, was re-elected as the country's president for a second term in the office on Tuesday.

Bhandari was re-elected as the president of Nepal on Tuesday.

Out of the 334 federal parliament members, 326 cast their votes in the presidential election held at the Federal Parliament building in New Baneshwor, Kathmandu, today. The Federal parliament was formed after the completion of House of Representatives and Province Assembly elections in December. But only 862 participated in the election.

The vote bank of the Nepali Congress accounts for 11,428, with 76 seats in the Parliament and 113 in the Provincial Assemblies. Provincial Assembly member Rajib Gurung aka Deepak Manage, who is on the run after he was convicted in an attempted murder case, was also disqualified for voting.

Her victory was expected as her nomination in the Presidential elections was backed by the ruling left alliance CPN-UML and CPN, Sanghiya Samajbadi forum, and other parties. Even this time, Oli strongly stood by her, arguing that she is "too young to retire" and must be elected for another term.

Bhandari has a long political career. She also won two others elections from Kathmandu-2 in 1994 and 1999.

While Bhandari's elevation was smooth, local media reports indicated a tense meeting among the UML's top leaders during endorsement of the party's candidate for president.

During her previous tenure as the President, she had had a fair performance, save the controversy over delaying the ordinance of the National Assembly and not approving the nominees to the NA recommended by the erstwhile Sher Bahadur Deuba led government.

"She had good rapport with top leaders of both parties".
