Relentless Weather: More Snow as Another Nor'easter Takes Aim

The third major nor'easter in two weeks slammed the storm-battered Northeast on Tuesday, bringing blizzard conditions and 2 feet of snow to some communities and knocking out power to tens of thousands of homes and businesses.

A woman struggles through blowing snow while crossing Middle Street in Portland on Tuesday.

Although the latest storm wasn't expected to knock out power to as many power customers as last week's nor'easter did, because the snow is lighter and fluffier, more than 237,000 customers in MA were without power Tuesday afternoon. The National Weather Service said the storm easily met blizzard criteria (35 mph winds for more than three hours) in Boston, Falmouth, Hyannis, Plymouth and Martha's Vineyard.

The rest of the state is under a winter storm warning through 8 p.m.

According to the weather statement, forecasters say moderate snowfall is possible, creating a dusting on area roads and highways.

The National Weather Service said parts of MA could get up to 18 inches of snow and issued a coastal flood warning. "The heaviest snow and strongest winds will begin to taper off from southwest to northeast beginning this evening". In East Greenwich, the Rev. Bernard Healey said he celebrated noon Mass with "two hearty souls" who came despite the nor'easter.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect through Wednesday afternoon for parts of Tucker, Randolph, Raleigh, Fayette, Nicholas, Webster and Pocahontas counties with elevations at 3,000 feet or above expected to get the highest snowfall totals.

Between a foot and 18 inches is predicted for the Millinocket area, Washington County, southern Aroostook County, and for most of Oxford and Somerset counties. At least 14 to 18 inches of snow was expected. Hundreds of schools were also closed.

"This storm won't be as widespread as before", said Marc Chenard, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland.

Before the storm reached the Northeast, it first pummeled the South.

ME also braced for a hard hit.

A nor'easter that could bring blizzard conditions and almost 2 feet of snow to some areas of New England has started to intensify.

"That's when the unsafe snow rates will be", he said, around when people are usually driving home from work.

Virginia Riley, also in Boston, posted this video on Instagram of the whipping winds and snow.

Because of the wind, snow and whiteout conditions, officials had advised people to stay indoors on Tuesday.

The weather service has warned Mainers to take caution on the roads during that time, when heavy snow could make travel impossible in some places. Snow continues to fall at a rate of two inches an hour across most of the state.
