Sensex Falls Over 100 Points, Nifty Struggles Below 10100

The BSE Sensex gained over 100 points in opening trading session on Tuesday ahead of the US Fed policy meeting. In the broader market, the BSE Midcap and the BSE Smallcap indices underperformed to lose up to 0.7 per cent. It finally settled at 32,996.76, showing a gain of 73.64 points, or 0.22 %. The Sensex soon dipped below the psychological 33000-mark to hit a day's low of 32856.54 and later closed at 32923.12. Markets benefited from value-buying in recently-battered stocks and a mixed trend overseas, as investors focused on new Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell's first policy meeting starting later in the day amid concerns of a global trade war, brokers said.

The Nifty was trading above the crucial 10,100 level, up 0.52 per cent, at 10,146.55.

The laggards were Bharti Airtel, NTPC, Kotak Bank, M&M, IndusInd Bank, Axis Bank, Sun Pharma and ITC, falling up to 1.42 percent.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell as much as 425 during the session and ended won 335.60 points, or 1.35 percent, at 24,610.91.

Major gainers in the 30-share index were Tata Steel (2.70%), Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (1.14%), Tata Power Company (1.13%), Bajaj Auto (1.09%), Tata Motors (1.04%), and Infosys (0.93%).

The Nifty IT index ended 1.51 percent higher after three sessions of losses.

In the Asian region, Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.72 per cent, Japan's Nikkei shed 0.09%, while Shanghai Composite Index down 0.26% in their early deals.

MSCI's main 47-country world stock index fell 1.1 percent in afternoon trading after European stocks dipped and benchmark US indexes declined.
