According to a statement from Boston Marathon officials that was included in Hasay's tweet, an MRI conducted Sunday showed a stress reaction in the heel of her foot. "I wish my fellow competitors and everyone taking part the very best of luck and I look forward to toeing the line with them next year and for many years after that".

Huddle has been a success at shorter distances, although her only marathon result was a third-place finish at NY in 2016.Flanagan, 36, missed last year's race with an injury but won at NY with extra rest.

After sitting out the past two Boston Marathons (due to the Olympics in 2016 and an injury last year), the Nike athlete has high hopes for Monday's race.
