Barbara Bush in 'failing health,' will not seek additional medical treatment

Barbara Bush, wife of George H.W. Bush and mother to George W. Bush, is seriously ill and has chosen to stop receiving care to prolong her life, according to a statement from her family on Sunday.

Earlier a year ago, they both spent time in separate rooms in the same Houston hospital, both being treated for breathing problems.

Family spokesman Jim McGrath has not provided the details on the status of Mrs. She says Bush is in "great spirits".

After a series of health complications requiring hospitalizations, Barbara Bush [92] has decided she does not want to seek further medical help, only comfort care.

"It will not surprise those who know her that Barbara Bush has been a rock in the face of her failing health, worrying not for herself - thanks to her abiding faith - but for others", the statement said.

Following the reports of her condition, many politicians shared memories, prayers and well wishes of Bush across social media, including Hillary Clinton, who on Monday said she was "thinking about Barbara Bush's legacy of service to our country and the extraordinary family she raised".

"I'm not sure God will recognize me; I have so many new body parts!" she joked.

In true Barbara Bush fashion, when she learned about the press release, Neil said, she began answering phone calls from anxious friends to reassure them. "You've got to think of something better than yourself and your daily life and do something good for others every day". McIngvale, recognized for his charity work particularly after Hurricane Harvey, called Barbara Bush a force for good.

Mrs. Bush married George H.W. Bush on January 6, 1945 when he was still a naval aviator.

The couple also has 17 grandchildren.

'She's a fighter. She's an enforcer, ' Hager told Today's Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb from New Jersey, where she was reporting on another story for the morning show.

The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy began during her White House years with the goal of improving the lives of disadvantaged Americans by boosting literacy among parents and their children.

She also authored C. Fred's Story and Millie's Book, two anecdotes that are based on the life of her dogs. Mrs. The foundation partners with local programs and has awarded more than $40 million to create or expand more than 1,500 literacy programs nationwide.
