Girl found dead with '86 wounds'

Industrialist Anand Mahindra on Sunday lost his cool over reports of rape of nine-year-old girl whose body was found in Surat with 86 injury marks. The girl's body was found under the bushes near a cricket stadium in Pandesara area of Surat on April 6 morning, "We will widen our probe to trace the perpetrators of the crime". The body had numerous injury marks, indicating that she was heavily tortured before being killed, said Police. The police also believe that she was murdered somewhere else and the dead body has been thrown here.

Amid widespread anger and protests across the country over the Kathua and Unnao rape and murder cases, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Friday said such incidents could not be part of any civilised society and promised to make sure that the culprits do not get away.

Satish Sharma, Commissioner of Police, Surat, said the girl, who probably belonged to the Odiya or Bengali community, was killed and the body dumped outside the city. Meanwhile, the police said that all efforts were being made to identify the girl.

In similar incident, an eight-year-old girl was kidnapped, raped and murdered by a group of men in Kathua of Jammu and Kashmir.

A case has been registered the unidentified accused has been booked for rape under The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

Sharma said that probably the girl could belong to either Orissa or West Bengal and hence more focus is being given to zero-in on the identities of girls missing from these states.

"1200 posters have been posted across Surat for identification of girl". Even as the police await the results of forensic tests to confirm sexual assault, Dr Ganesh Govekar of the city civil hospital, where the post-mortem was conducted, shared chilling details. Police had earlier announced an award of Rs 20,000 for any information about the girl. The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) has been engaged in the investigation.

In the Unnao case, the Yogi Adityanath government has come under fire for allegedly trying to shield the influential party MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar who was accused of raping a 17 year-old girl in June last year.
