Here's why Apple is offering free repairs for Apple Watch

But there's a (big) caveat: the gratis maintenance service is in place strictly for devices suffering from battery issues, according to a leaked internal document. All variants of the 42mm Series 2 Watch are covered, including the Sport, Edition, Hermes, and Nike+ models.

To remedy the problem, Apple says it is offering to service eligible devices for free.

According to an internal document first obtained by MacRumors, which was distributed to certain Apple Stores and authorised service providers, the fix covers only 42mm-sized Series 2 units covering all its models - Sport, Edition, Hermes and Nike+.

The new policy does not apply to Apple Watch Series 1 and Series 3 models, nor the 38mm model.

Apple has released a new service policy regarding the Apple watch Series 2.

"Apple will authorise coverage for eligible devices for 3 years after the original date of purchase". Warranty status does not matter for this issue.

The reasons behind Apple Watch Series 2 not turning on for some users is unclear at this point and the memo does not shed enough light on it as well.

Will you be taking advantage of Apple's revised service agreement? In some cases, a defective battery is preventing the Apple Watch from powering on, and in other instances customers are complaining about their timepieces expanding, with a swollen battery pushing against the chassis. Apple has nearly always replaced or serviced such devices and generally covers expanded batteries past the 1-year warranty date, regardless of a program such as this.

Apple implemented a similar policy regarding those as well. Fortunately those criteria are mainly that the Apple Watch be a 42mm Series 2 model. Let us know down in the comments!
