Japan calls China to jointly work for N. Korea's denuclearisation

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi yesterday began a visit to Japan described as a major step forward in improving frosty relations, as Tokyo tries to stay involved in a flurry of global diplomacy over North Korea.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi says he has reconfirmed the Japanese government's willingness to improve bilateral ties. Abe and Xi have never held talks in the format of an official visit by either side since both men took office in 2012.

Wang's visit marks a historic first-ever visit of a Chinese Foreign Minister to Japan and it takes place shortly before a batch of planned summits between South Korean President, Moon Jae-in, North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un, and US President Donald Trump. Now, China has an added incentive to fix ties with Japan, after a series of surprises from Trump on North Korea, Taiwan and trade sanctions.

He finally managed to turn the tide past year with a qualified pledge of cooperation on Chinese President Xi Jinping's signature Belt and Road trade and infrastructure initiative.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will make the proposal when he meets Trump at Mar-a-Lago, the president´s Florida resort, on Tuesday and Wednesday, the paper said.

Despite the diplomatic push, tensions over territory and Japan's militarist history remain. The Self-Defense Forces activated a new amphibious unit to help defend remote islands just a week ago.

Japan hopes the summit will prompt a trip by Abe to China, and in turn, a visit to Japan by Xi.

Asian rivals China and Japan on Monday pledged a "new starting point" for bilateral ties, vowing to co-operate closely amid a flurry of diplomacy on the North Korean missile threat.

Trump unexpectedly indicated on Thursday the United States might rejoin the landmark Trans Pacific Partnership, but only if it offered "substantially better" terms than those provided after previous negotiations. Recent polls show public support for his cabinet has fallen below disapproval.

"Even if Abe resigns, Japan is relatively stable".
