Lung Association releases annual "State of the Air" report for NY

Lung Association releases annual

This is the 19th year that the American Lung Association has released its clean air report.

The American Lung Association gave San Diego a failing grade Wednesday it its latest ranking of pollution levels across the country.

State wide four counties were given "F" grades when it comes to high ozone days and particle pollution: Davis, Salt Lake, Utah, and Weber. Many cities across the nation experienced more days when ground-level ozone, also known as "smog", reached unsafe levels, including most of the cities with the worst ozone problems.

The annual State of Global Air Report, published on Tuesday by the Health Effects Institute (HEI), said that long-term exposure to air pollution is responsible for around 6.1 million deaths around the planet in 2016 alone, CNN reports. This type of pollution can trigger asthma attacks, heart attacks and strokes if the small particles get lodged in the lungs.

The study, said HEI president Dan Greenbaum, "leads a growing worldwide consensus-among the WHO, World Bank, International Energy Agency and others-that air pollution poses a major global public health challenge".

"Federal and state policies like the Clean Air Act and strong California clean auto standards are working". Many people also are at great risk from smog and particulate matter, especially if they already have chronic health problems such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes.

The report says everyone's health is at risk, including children with asthma and adults 65 and over.

Nearly 60 per cent of the world breathes air which is three-and-a-half times the "healthy limit" of pollution.

California was home to eight of the 10 most air-polluted USA cities, according to a new report.

The Los Angeles/Long Beach area took the dubious distinction of being the nation's most ozone-polluted city as it has for almost the entire 19-year history of the report.

Ozone, according to county officials, is caused by emissions of certain chemicals called oxides of nitrogen and volatile organic material in the presence of sunlight. Nationwide, the best progress in this year's report came in reducing year-round levels of particle pollution.

The research was conducted by using satellite data and improved monitoring tools to assess the impact of air pollution across the globe. "But for long term, people need to keep in mind to drive less, use less electricity, because that power comes from a power plant some place, and plants often make air pollution, people should also make sure that they are using any solvents correctly and avoid burning trash". Charleston, North Charleston, Greenville, Spartanburg and Anderson reported significantly more unhealthy air days.
