Mark Zuckerberg Is Back Before Congress For A 2nd Day Of Testimony

At Tuesday's congressional hearing, Illinois Senator Dick Durbin asked Mark Zuckerberg if he'd be comfortable sharing the name of the hotel he stayed at the previous night. The second round was more hard.

During almost five hours of questioning by 44 United States senators, Mr Zuckerberg repeated apologies he previously made for a range of problems that have beset Facebook, from a lack of data protection to Russian agents using Facebook to influence U.S. elections. The spokesman would point only to previous statements that Kogan sold data to former Cambridge Analytica employee Christopher Wylie and a company he founded called Eunoia Technologies.

Throughout the hearings, Zuckerberg repeatedly emphasized that he isn't against the idea of Facebook being regulated, and pledged to work with policymakers on proposed rules. So to make them care it's only recently that Facebook has allowed you to download all of the data that they have on you.

"The internet is growing in importance around the world in people's lives and I think that it is inevitable that there will need to be some regulation", Zuckerberg said during testimony before the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Pallone called the response "disappointing". Shadow profiles are essentially pockets of data filled with information about those that have deleted Facebook or have yet to even set up a profile to begin with.

Rep. Ben Lujan, D-N.M., asked Zuckerberg about the privacy rights of people who were not Facebook users, but whose data nevertheless was collected by Facebook.

Facebook envy can be more destructive than data mining. If so, Facebook could be subject to hefty fines.

Facebook has 19 million monthly active users in South Africa, according to the social media giant.

The shares fell steeply after it came to light that millions of users' personal information was harvested from Facebook by Cambridge Analytica, a political consultancy that has counted US President Donald Trump's election campaign among its clients.

During the five-hour testimony on Wednesday, Zuckerberg admitted that his profile data was among those exposed in the Cambridge Analytica leak. Reps for Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment clarifying his remarks.

Virginia Senator David McKinley grilled the social media mogul over illegal opioid dealers and markets that were using Facebook to promote and distribute drugs, saying that it was "hurting its users". It's not clear what that regulation would look like and Zuckerberg didn't offer any specifics. CBS News' Tony Dokoupil watched the Facebook CEO testify Tuesday at San Francisco's Founders Space where Steve Hoffman helps support start-ups.

Others noted however that lawmakers had demonstrated little knowledge of how Facebook works - potentially complicating any regulatory effort.

Even, apparently, to Mr Zuckerberg himself.

In both hearings, legislators pushed Zuckerberg on its potential monopoly power. It's unclear, however, how many of those apps are also owned by Facebook.

Even companies as large as Facebook with all of their resources and technical expertise can't keep control of the data. It also reignited long simmering concerns about Facebook's impact on the world's privacy, civil discourse and domestic institutions.

Investors were impressed with his performance. Facebook shares jumped as Zuckerberg spoke to the senators, closing up 4.5 per cent in NY trading.
