Mark Zuckerberg to testify before US Congress amid Cambridge Analytica scandal

Facebook's new privacy policy aims to explain the data it gathers on users more clearly - but doesn't actually change what it collects and shares.

Facebook was also hit on Tuesday in a San Francisco court by the first of what could be many lawsuits by shareholders claiming to suffer losses because the company misled them about its ability to protect user data.

"There are administrative sanctions".

Facebook employees could face up to 12 years in jail and a fine of up to 12 billion rupiah ($873,000 or £620,000), Rudiantara said.

Multiple congressional committees have asked Zuckerberg to testify in light of reporting about Cambridge Analytica's use of Facebook data to target American voters in the 2016 election.

The news comes weeks after Facebook was rocked by a monumental data privacy scandal. The technological giant lives its biggest crisis after revealing that consultant Cambridge Analytica had access to information of 50 million users without vast majority of m knew.

Since March 16, when the news about Cambridge Analytica was disclosed, Facebook shares have fallen almost 18 percent.

The social network's chief executive officer, who has never testified before congress, decided last week that he would need to do so now, according to a person familiar with the matter.

"This was a major breach of trust, and I'm really sorry that this happened", he added. Facebook and its competitors will also need to be much more specific about how they plan to use people's data, and they will need to get explicit consent. Russian data scientist Aleksandr Kogan accessed the data on behalf of Cambridge Anaylitica.

In other words, if you're lucky enough to be a European citizen Facebook is going to have to abide by GDPR (Europe's General Data Protection Regulation), due to come into force next month. Several users were surprised to learn recently that Facebook had been collecting such data.

Last week, Mr. Zuckerberg unveiled a centralized system for users to better control privacy and security settings and allow users to hide personal information, including political preferences.

"We think that this is a good opportunity to take that moment across the rest of the world", he said.

Cambridge Analytica has denied all the media claims and said it deleted the data after learning the information did not adhere to data protection rules.

He told CNN the site would be reviewing thousands of apps in an "intensive process".

He said he was confident Facebook could "get in front" of the problem.
