The outage has also shut down entire stores.

Social media posts indicate stores impacted locally include Walkerston and Caneland Central.

"Shoppers have been told to leave groceries in baskets in the aisle", one customer from Brisbane wrote on Twitter.

Registers temporarily shut down at a number of Woolworths stores across the nation due to a major technical outage this afternoon.

According to the company, the outage affected registers at its supermarkets in the afternoon, leading to what it characterised as an inability to carry out business "for a short period of time this afternoon". "We apologise for any inconvenience caused".

Woolworths stores across the country have had to shut down registers and are unable to make sales.
