South Carolina's governor is expressing support for his state prisons chief following riots at a maximum-security prison that killed seven inmates. Four inmates were killed by a pair of prisoners in the state's Kirkland Correctional Institution past year.

State law enforcement is responding to a situation at Lee Correctional Institution Sunday night.

South Carolina Department of Corrections did not immediately return a request for comment Monday morning.

No officers or staff members were among those killed or harmed, the corrections department added.

"The incident involved multiple inmates on inmate altercations in three housing units", the department said. Some local media reported the local coroner had been called.

An hours-long prison brawl in SC has left seven inmates dead, reports WRDW.

Several emergency crews responded to the Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville where seven inmates were killed.
