Shenmue HD Remaster Announced - Coming to Xbox, PC and PS4

Shenmue HD Remaster Announced - Coming to Xbox, PC and PS4

Sega confirmed the news at Sega Fest 2018, saying these action-adventure classics will be making their way to PS4 in Japan.

As Kotaku notes, both Shenmue I and Shenmue II will be arriving for Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC later this year, giving a whole lot of gamers some serious deja vu.

Slash Gear, for one, is calling the newly announced releases an HD remake of the original.

Meanwhile, the successfully Kickstarted third installment, Shenmue 3, is now still in development and will be released later this year. This could be based on Sega's earlier comment back in 2016 that two of the biggest issues coming in the way of "Shenmue" 1 and 2 being brought back are the quality of the originals and the work needed to secure the licenses for all the products and logos that appeared in them.

This re-release is expected to stay true to the original games while affording the modern conveniences of scaleable resolution, a choice of modern or classic control schemes, and an updated user interface. Pre-orders for the re-release are already live, but a final release date has yet to be announced.

The games will be released in both physical and digital formats, and they'll feature improved textures, which should come as a relief to anyone who remembers the original Dreamcast versions.

Shenmue is a tale of retribution as Ryo Hazuki seeks out to avenge his father's death and attempts to unravel the secrets behind a mysterious artifact known as the Dragon Mirror. However, we should know more about what relationship - if any - the titles will have when Shenmue III releases (hopefully) later this year.
