South and North Korea agree on holding summit on April 27

The summit will be seen as a victory for Moon, who has always been pushing hard for diplomatic relations with North Korea.

Kim said on his trip to Beijing that the situation on the Korean Peninsula was starting to improve after Pyongyang took the initiative to ease tensions and proposed peace talks. Kim's father and predecessor, Kim Jong Il, met with South Korean Presidents Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun in 2000 and 2007, respectively, in Pyongyang, the North Korean capital.

Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono told parliament that his nation would consider holding talks with North Korea in the context of the other summits taking place. North Korea over the past two decades has been repeatedly accused of using disarmament talks as a way to ease outside pressure and win badly needed aid, while all along secretly pushing ahead with its weapons development. Leaders of the two nations - which are still technically at war - have only met twice since the peninsula was divided in 1948.

When asked for clarification on Trump's comments on holding up the South Korean deal, State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert told reporters that she had not heard the U.S. president's remarks.

Earlier this month the U.S. president shocked many by abruptly agreeing to meet with Kim, after South Korean officials relayed the apparent invitation from Kim, whom they had recently met in Pyongyang.

A senior South Korean official says the summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in will be shaped by discussions on denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

The Geneva Agreement in 1994, Joint Statement of the Fourth Round of the Six-Party Talks on September 19, 2005, and the "Leap Day" Agreement in 2012 are just some of the results of past U.S. -DPRK negotiations which later turned out to be failed attempts for denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

Kevin Rudd, former Australian Prime Minister and Asia Society Policy Institute President, told CNN there had been a wide misreading of Kim's statements on denuclearization.

"This language (of denuclearization) is not new, it's been around for quite a long time, and the core point is its highly conditional".

The April inter-Korean summit is not the only meeting in the works.

Kim and his wife also personally hosted a dinner for the group on Monday night at the Workers' party headquarters, the first time South Korean officials have visited the building, according to Seoul's presidential office.

The actual summit is slated to happen at the Peace House on Panmunjom's south side.

On Wednesday, the U.S. and South Korea announced an agreement "in principle" on "general terms" for amending the 2012 U.S. -Republic of Korea Free Trade Agreement (KORUS FTA).

Trump noted the "rhetoric has calmed down" with North Korea, but added he may put a hold on the first trade agreement concluded by his administration, "because it's a very strong card and I want to make sure everyone is treated fairly".

The North Korean representative Ri agreed, saying visiting Tongil-gak was "emotional" for all Korean visitors.

"Korea is part of the problem on steel", Lighthizer said on CNBC's Squawk Box.
