Syrian air defences shoot down missiles over two air bases

It also reported that the missiles were shot down by the country's air defences.

Six missiles targeted the Shayrat airbase in the central province of Homs and the Syrian air defences intercepted majority, Xinhua reported citing the report, adding that three other missiles targeted the Dumair airbase in the Dumair area in the eastern Qalamoun region north of Damascus and were all intercepted before reaching their targets.

The United States past year targeted the Shayrat airbase with cruise missiles in response to a sarin gas attack on the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhun.

Meanwhile, Russia says it will help secure visit of global chemical weapons inspectors to site of an alleged attack in Syria. Meanwhile, the state news agency SANA reported the overnight attack in Homs, spelling no further details but added that the source of the missile strike is not yet known amid speculations that Israel is more likely to be behind the attack after the Pentagon denied carrying out operations on the aforementioned airbases.

The decision comes two days after France took part in US-led air strikes on suspected chemical sites in Damascus following an alleged chemical attack in the Ghouta town of Douma.

A Pentagon spokesman said there was no U.S. military activity in that area at this time. Social media reports are pointing the finger at Israel for the strikes.

Israel has previously carried out air strikes during the conflict in Syria, targeting Iran-backed militias fighting alongside the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The Syrian military believes Israeli warplanes were responsible.

Syria and its main allies Iran and Russian Federation blamed Israel for that attack.

Asked about the missile attack, an Israeli military spokesman told Reuters, "We don't comment on such reports".

Syrian government has strongly rejected the allegations as fabrication by the rebels and Western countries to justify a military attack on Syria.
