Theresa May faces Parliament over Syria strikes

The UK has begun air strikes against Syrian chemical weapons sites.

"I believe that the action taken will have significantly degraded the Syrian regime's ability to use chemical weapons", she said.

She declined to say whether Bashar al-Assad should stay in power and said talks with allies would continue on finding a political solution to the civil war. It is not about regime change.

French President Emmanuel Macron said the strikes had been limited so far to Syria's chemical weapons facilities.

Stop the War, a pacifist coalition once chaired by Corbyn, has called a demonstration outside the British parliament on Monday to protest about the strikes.

"This collective action sends a clear message that the worldwide community will not stand by and tolerate the use of chemical weapons", May told a press conference.

David Cameron, who was prime minister in 2013, tweeted on Saturday: "As we have seen in the past, inaction has its consequences".

Germany, Italy, Canada, Australia and European Council president Donald Tusk have "all expressed their support for the actions that Britain, France and America have taken", the PM will add.

The Prime Minister spent Saturday evening speaking to world leaders to explain why Britain had joined forces with France and the U.S. and will insist the three nations are "not alone" in believing it was the "right thing to do".

Britain has blamed Russian Federation for the poisoning - a charge vehemently denied by Moscow which has accused London of failing to come up with evidence for its claims.

Britain's defense ministry said "very careful scientific analysis" had been applied to maximize the destruction of stockpiled chemicals while minimizing any risk of contamination to surrounding areas.

Williamson told BBC radio that all British crews returned safely and early indications were that the strikes had been "highly successful".

May held an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss possible action on Thursday and there had been calls for the British parliament to be consulted before any air strikes.

Polls in recent days have shown public wariness of military intervention in Syria, with Britain still haunted by its participation in the US-led invasion of Iraq.

The United States responded with 58 missile strikes that destroyed 20% of the Syrian airforce.

"This legally questionable action risks escalating further... an already devastating conflict".

Other opposition leaders joined in the criticism.
