Trump Declares 'Mission Accomplished' In Syria Strike

Mohammed, his wife, and two daughters are Syrian refugees and to them, the mission that was accomplished was a different one.

Germany didn't join the United States, Britain and France in the strikes, though Chancellor Angela Merkel has called the attack "necessary and appropriate". Moscow criticised the joint United Nations and OPCW inquiry as flawed.

Some estimate that up to 500 people-mainly women and children-were hospitalized by the gas attack, which is said to have been carried out by the government of Bashar al-Assad. The strikes "successfully hit every target" and the allies "took every measure and caution" to only hit the intended targets, White said Saturday morning.

An important research center, an equipment facility and a command post and a storage facility all were hit. Iraq war veteran and Hawaii Democrat Tulsi Gabbard expressed concern that "military action in Syria could escalate into a war with Russian Federation and Iran".

Pentagon spokesman Lt. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie denied reports that Syrian air defence systems had take down 71 of the missiles launched and said that all 105 had reached their targets.

In his televised address from the White House on Friday, Trump said the USA was prepared to keep up the economic, diplomatic and military pressure on Assad until he ends a pattern of killing his own people with internationally banned chemical weapons.

McKenzie said 105 US and allied missiles were fired, of which 66 were Tomahawk cruise missiles launched from aboard three Navy ships and one Navy submarine.

"They didn't shoot one down", Trump said during an appearance Monday in Florida, mocking Russia's ever-growing claims of success in thwarting the attack.

The United States, Britain and France launched air strikes in response to a suspected chemical attack in the rebel-held town of Douma a week ago that killed at least 40 people. Syria has denied the accusation.

The trio of Western powers that carried out the strikes warned they would repeat the operation if Damascus used chemical weapons again.

The funds will be allocated to NGOs and UN agencies working on the ground in Syria, including the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the French president's office said.

"It's impossible to say at this point the mission has been accomplished", King, who caucuses with Democrats, said on CNN's "State of the Union".

The attacks happened Friday and US president Donald Trump took to Twitter Saturday calling it "A mission accomplished".

The Russian military, meanwhile, claims to have struck down a majority of the missiles.

Putin added that Russian military experts who inspected Douma found no trace of the attack. Inspectors from the worldwide chemical weapons watchdog group were in Damascus and had been expected to head to Douma on Saturday.

"It's a pin prick in the end because Bashar has been using these chemical weapons for years".

He told reporters in Moscow that what is hampering a speedy resolution of the visit to Douma was "the consequences of the illegal, unlawful military action", a reference to the punitive airstrikes. In the face of substantial evidence to the contrary, Russia's pushback on behalf of Syria and Assad is significant. He said at least one chemical was used - chlorine, which also has legitimate industrial uses and had not previously triggered a US military response.

The UK, US and France have said the Syrian government was responsible. It said there were no indications any of the chemical agents had been released into the air as a result of the strikes.

Defense officials from the countries involved in the attack gave differing accounts of how much warning was given to the Russians, Syria's powerful ally.
