Trump Tells Russia: 'Get Ready' For US Missiles Striking Syria

The operation was conducted with cruise missiles launched from outside Syria's borders. The administration wanted to avoid a strike that could trigger a wider war in Syria, where Russian, Iranian and Turkish forces operate.

Trump has said that Assad and Russia's President Vladimir Putin may have to "pay a big price" for the alleged action, and Washington's United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley made it clear that the failure to secure a Security Council vote would not hold America and its allies back.

It was the 12th time that Russian Federation has used its veto power at the council to block action targeting its Syrian ally.

"If there is a strike by the Americans, then. the missiles will be downed and even the sources from which the missiles were fired", Alexander Zasypkin told Hezbollah's al-Manar TV Tuesday evening, speaking in Arabic, according to Reuters.

Russian ambassador to Beirut also said that Moscow would respond to any USA military actions against Syria.

British Ambassador Karen Pierce also told the meeting that the United Kingdom initially wants to see an investigation of the attack by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

His remarks follow Russia's veto of a US draft Security Council resolution calling for an independent investigation to establish with certainty if Syria used poison gas against civilians in Douma, a rebel-held suburb of Damascus, last week.

The White House said that, in a telephone call, Trump and British Prime Minister Theresa May "agreed not to allow the use of chemical weapons to continue".

The request comes after recent reports emerged about an alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria, published by Syrian opposition online news portals on April 7, claiming that a chemical attack took place in Syria in the city of Douma near Damascus.

United States ambassador Nikki Haley accused Russian Federation of having "the blood of Syrian children" on its hands after Mr Trump said that "nothing's off the table" in dealing with the alleged outrage.

Twelve of the 15-member U.N. Security Council voted in favor of the resolution.

US President Donald Trump has already pledged a "forceful" response to the alleged attack.

The incident has sparked worldwide outrage and ratcheted up tensions in the already volatile Mideast, raising the specter of possible imminent American retaliation amid Russia's warnings against any such action, and denials that any chemical weapons attack took place.

"From what we hear now, I am afraid they are looking for a military option, which is very, very unsafe", Nebenzia said.

Russian Federation proposed its own draft resolution in January to create a new investigation.

The Assad government and Russian Federation both urged the OPCW to investigate the allegations of chemical weapons use in Douma, a move by the two countries that was apparently aimed at averting any USA -led action.

She said discussions were ongoing over a possible military response by Britain and its allies that would prevent "repeats".

He announced that Russian Federation would propose a "transparent and honest" investigation at the Security Council. A U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer, the USS Donald Cook, is in the Mediterranean.

The attack in Douma comes nearly exactly a year after a chemical atrocity in the northern Syrian town of Khan Sheikhoun killed dozens of people.

The UN on Monday admitted its "feeble condemnations and paralyzed Security Council" in the wake of a deadly chemical attack in Douma, Syria, that reportedly killed dozens of civilians including women and children.
