Unnao Rape Case: CBI court sends Shashi Singh to 4-day custody

Forest Minister Lal Singh and Industries Minister Chandra Prakash Ganga resigned amid outrage over their support for the men accused of raping and murdering the 8-year-old girl in Kathua.

Ms Mufti's People's Democratic Party and the BJP had nearly reached a breaking point after the two BJP leaders participated in a rally on March 1 to protest against the Crime Branch.

The JKNPP leader alleged that the BJP ministers preferred to play a second fiddle to Mehbooba thus facilitating the promotion of her "pro-separatist agenda" in the state.

The CBI arrested BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in connection with the alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district last year and the custodial death of her father earlier this week.

In the viral audio, Suneet Kumar Singh, station house officer (SHO) of Mauranipur police station, is heard telling Lekhraj Yadav, who's accused in dozens of murder, kidnapping and extortion cases, that his phone and location were on police's radar and he was next on the list of encounter. When an organisation organised a protest against the initial investigations into the case, two BJP ministers in the J&K cabinet joined in. "It was sheer indiscretion on their part", he said.

Madhav had said, "There is no question of any pressure".

On the plea for a CBI probe saying the investigations have been completed in three months and a charge sheet has been submitted in the court. They made the two ministers resign. The CBI team also arrested six suspended police personnel from Unnao and brought them to Lucknow for questioning.

BJP spokesperson Sunil Seth said the final decision to induct ministers would be taken by party high command. "And if PDP and BJP continue to resolve their issues like this, I see there is no substitute to this alliance", he said.

According to police charges, the minor from the nomad Bakerwal community was kidnapped on January 10.

He said a perception was created by the opposition, particularly Congress, that the two BJP leaders were "pro-rapists" and were trying to hamper the investigation.

He accused the Congress party of playing double standards.

Asked about the demand for a CBI probe into the incident, the BJP leader said: "It is now for the court to decide".
