It was then reported that one male student was shot in the arm.

It was not clear whether the suspect or the victim, who was in stable condition at a hospital, were students at the school. "This is ridiculous - there's too many school shootings", said parent Tracy Reed, whose son texted her about the shooting at his school.

Sheriff's deputies also received a call reporting shots fired in the vicinity of Manzanita Elementary School about 7 miles (11 kilometers) away from Highland High School.

Deputies are seen on the Highland High School campus in Palmdale on Friday, May 11, 2018, after a student was shot.

Harris said investigators were trying to determine what led up to the shooting.

Authorities learned a 14-year-old student with a rifle had fired and struck another student in the arm, Harris said.

The suspected shooter was apprehended near Vons grocery store in Palmdale, CNN reported.

FOX11 Los Angeles reported the suspect in custody was 14 years old and officials had the gun "they believe he used". The footage was shot by Jon Baird of KNX1070 Newsradio, who told Storyful that deputies had confirmed the boy in the vehicle had been detained in connection with the shooting.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said it was responding to a shooting at Highland High School, according to its official Twitter account.

All Antelope Valley Union High School District schools were placed on lockdown. Medical services were ready for any possibly injured students.

The Highland principal tweeted that people should "stay clear of campus" while authorities assess the situation.

This is a developing story.
