Alberto: Heavy rains expected for Central Florida

Alberto is the first named storm of 2018, and it comes days before the Atlantic hurricane season officially starts on June 1.

Despite Alberto's distance from us, its vast circulation will continue to stream in gusty southerly winds through Memorial Day Monday, along with occasional showers and thunderstorms.

According to Moss, for the most part, the rain will hold off Sunday, making it a great day for grilling out or trips to the pool. According to a report by CNN, the storm has already caused dreary weather for Memorial Day weekend all along the Gulf coast. Tampa Bay is under a slight risk of severe weather today, a few tornadoes are possible along with tropical downpours.

Subtropical Storm Alberto has gained an early jump on the 2018 hurricane season, heading toward expected landfall sometime Monday on the northern Gulf Coast, prompting thousands to evacuate.

Slowly strengthening Subtropical Storm Alberto could cause more than $1 billion in economic losses to the U.S. Gulf Coast as it tracks north, bringing a growing threat of floods, but it's had little impact on offshore energy production.

Chuck Watson, a disaster modeler at Enki Research in Savannah said the main concern from the subtropical storm is flooding.

The system was moving north at 13 miles per hour. Only.13 inches had fallen at the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport through 5 p.m. Saturday, but almost 6 inches has fallen so far this month, about three times the normal amount. Altogether we're looking at a solid 2-3 inches of rain from Alberto with locally-heavier amounts possible where heavy storms set up.

The 40-mph winds extend outward up to 140 miles, mostly to the east of the center, which prompted the tropical storm warning for Manatee, Sarasota and the other coastal counties.

The newest track from the National Hurricane Service calls for Alberto to move north-northeastward and strengthen over the next 24 hours.

It is expected to bring 5 to 10 inches of rain and isolated storm totals of 20 inches, which could produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides. Subtropical storms can develop into tropical storms, which in turn can strengthen into hurricanes.

"Do not think that only areas in the cone will be impacted - everyone in our state must be prepared", Scott said in a statement.

"There are no strong climate signals saying it's going to be extremely active, like a year ago, or extremely weak", said Gerry Bell, the lead hurricane forecaster at NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, speaker with reporters Thursday.

It's not been an ideal holiday weekend so far for the state as both Saturday and Sunday have offered up scattered showers and thunderstorms.
