Apple sued for selling Macbooks with defective keyboards

Apple sued for selling Macbooks with defective keyboards

Barbaro and Rao assert that Apple must have known the keyboards were "defective" by the time they reached the public, since complaints started mounting soon after the original 12-inch MacBook launched in 2015. The company is accused of knowingly selling MacBooks with faulty butterfly keyboards. The keyboard doesn't seem to be very much different from the previous models, but underneath the keys is the butterfly mechanism which was implemented for a smoother and more responsive keystroke than the regular design.

Anyone with a 2015 or newer MacBook or MacBook Pro may be able to take their keyboard frustrations out on the man itself. Apple claims that the butterfly mechanism is created to make smoother and more responsive keystrokes than the usual designs.

Even if the lawsuit ends up being successful, which is not guaranteed, it will probably be years before any users receive anything in a settlement. "The problems are widespread, consistent, and infuriating", Taylor says. Now in its second generation, the tech has not received a glowing reception after its mechanism was found to fail twice as fast as MacBooks with a more traditional keyboard.

According to thousands of users, the failure is in the butterfly keyboard mechanism which makes the machine useless.

An Apple PR representative declined to comment.

The MacBook butterfly keyboard is thinner, but the mechanism gets easily stuck according to both a recall petition and a lawsuit. "Though it appears to function normally when new, the MacBook has a defective keyboard".

Ultimately, the lawsuit alleges, Apple is "aware of" these keyboard issues, either via "pre-release testing", customer complaints, or a combination thereof, but the company has "failed and continues to fail to disclose" the defect to customers.

Among other things, the suit accuses Apple of fraudulent concealment, and for violating California's Unfair Competition Law and Consumer Legal Remedies Act, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act and the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act.

"Owners of these laptops have reported a potential defect, which causes keys on the keyboard to become unresponsive, necessitating complete replacement of the keyboard", the firm writes on its website.

The petition has so far been signedby over 20,000 people and quotes a number of MacBook Pro owners who have run into various keyboard issues, from sticky keys, to defective keys, to those who have found their MacBook Pro entirely unusable because of keyboard failure.
