Australia's First Mass Shooting In Two Decades Leaves Seven Dead

The children's bodies were discovered with their mother and grandparents.

Another nearby resident, former university philosophy lecturer and former shire councillor Felicity Haynes, said the family had moved to rural Osmington from Margaret River about three years ago for the safety and seclusion of rural life.

Early indications are that police are not looking for a suspect and the incident is being treated as a murder-suicide.

Although the details of this tragedy are yet to come to light, Australia has a tragic history of higher rate of gun deaths in rural areas.

Police Commissioner Chris Dawson said two firearms were found and the victims suffered gunshot wounds.

Two adults were found outside the house and the other five bodies were discovered inside. They all resided at the property, he said.

News Corp is reporting an emergency call alerting police to the shooting at the Margaret River farm just after 5am is believed to have been from the killer himself.

"Police are at present responding to what I can exclusively describe as a horrific incident", Dawson advised reporters.

"This devastating tragedy will no doubt have a lasting impact on the families concerned, the whole community, and in particular, the communities in our southwest".

WA Police District Superintendent Mick Sutherland speaks to media at the scene.

Not less than a few of the our bodies had gunshot wounds, authorities stated; however it wasn't clear whether or not all the victims had been fatally shot. He declined to launch the names or ages of the lifeless. Afterward, Australia enacted some of the toughest gun-control laws in the world, buying back or even confiscating some one million weapons. Instead, Western Australia authorities are referring to what may have been a domestic incident as a "mass shooting". In particular, farmers are given exceptions due to their "legitimate need" for firearms in vermin control and in being able to humanely destroy sick or injured livestock.

Osmington is a group of some streets, farms, horse studs, trip lodging and vineyards supplying the premium winemaking district often known as Margaret River. The incident prompted the nation to introduce stringent gun controls. Two firearms were found.

"My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and everyone affected by this tragedy, including first responders", she said.
