Coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce spreads to more states

One Florida case of E. coli linked to romaine lettuce has been reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Public Health Agency of Canada says two of the six Canadians reported travelling to the USA before falling ill due to E. coli O157, three became infected in Canada and the remaining case is under investigation.

The CDC regularly publishes any new updates in the outbreak and has advised against buying or eating any romaine lettuce that you can not confirm came from outside the Yuma region.

Experts say to use caution when eating romaine lettuce and to try to avoid it entirely, unless you know where it was grown.

If any symptoms of E. coli infection surface, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends drinking lots of fluids and getting rest as well as contacting a health care provider.

According to the latest CDC data, the most-recent E. coli illnesses related to this outbreak started on April 25. At least 64 people have been hospitalized including 17 with kidney failure. One death was reported from California.

Complicating matters further is the fact that the vegetables from many different farms is often combined at different points along the supply chain, so tracing the source of the E. coli back to its source becomes incredibly complex.

As of April, eight people from Idaho had gotten sick from E. coli. They include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. At this rate, the E. coli outbreak is expected to worsen overtime.

One farm was found by the Food and Drug Administration to be the source of the whole-head romaine lettuce that sickened several people at a correctional facility in Alaska. With supportive treatment, most people recover in a matter of five to seven days.

Of the 149 reported cases, ill people range in age from 1 to 88 years, with a median age of 30, according to the CDC. The bacteria could have contaminated the lettuce any place in the production process.
