Danish director Lars von Triers's film leads to walkouts, outrage at Cannes

Von Trier has described as it his most gruesome and violently explicit movie to date, and during its screening last night at the Cannes Film Festival many viewers reportedly walked out in disgust over the violence on display. The walkout after he blows their heads off in the movie making over 100 watchers exit the space. Those who made it all the way to the end of the first screening gave von Trier a standing ovation, while others have defended the filmmaker on social media.

Despite the criticism, Lars Von Trier has defended his film against any kind of "censorship" urging people to go and see it as it is.

- Kyle Buchanan (@kylebuchanan) May 14, 2018I've never seen anything like this at a film festival.

"Von Trier reeeeeally lingers on the children's corpses here, panning up and down their bodies as though he were directing a lascivious advertisement".

Entertainment reporter Roger Friedman took to Twitter to say: "Walked out on Lars von Trier".

"It's disgusting", Setoodeh reported one woman as saying. Speaking to the Guardian at the time, he said that the film will celebrate "the idea that life is evil and soulless, which is sadly proven by the recent rise of the Homo trumpus - the rat king". "It is probably one of my absolute favourite Lars von Trier movies". His first victim is Uma Thurman's stranded road traveler (credited as "Lady 1"), an albeit annoying individual who insists that Jack take her to a nearby blacksmiths to weld back together the jack needed to fix her auto.

The House That Jack Built was reviewed at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. The House That Jack Built is an uncompromising, barbaric, distressing watch, and one very hard to stomach. Here's the trailer for you:The movie costars Uma Thurman and Riley Keough and it's expected in select USA theaters this fall.
