Diamond League: Reece Prescod upstages Justin Gatlin to win 100m in Shanghai

De Grasse, from Markham, Ont., finished eighth in a time of 10.25, while defending world champion Justin Gatlin of the US finished seventh, in 10.20.

"When I saw the rain tonight I thought, "yes", said the British champion. "It is definitely the happiest moment in my time on the Diamond League circuit", the Briton said.

Prescod finished just 0.01 clear to frustrate what would have been a winning finale for the home country as world indoor silver medallist Su Bingtian had to settle for second ahead of compatriot Xie Zhenye, who clocked 10.17, 0.01 ahead of Ujah.

Home fans did have victories to cheer in the women's shot put and javelin as world champion Gong Lijiao was a dominant victor in the shot, throwing a world-leading 19.99m.

Manyonga was placed under early pressure in the men's long jump, achieving his first legal attempt in the third round when he leaped 8.11m to make the halfway cut, with Chinese opponent Shi Yuhao taking the lead with a second-round effort of 8.43m.

Danniel Thomas-Dodd of Jamaica took the silver at 18.70m and America's Raven Saunders finished third at 18.63m.

Olympic champion Brianna McNeal led a U.S. top four as she broke the 100m hurdles meeting record with a time of 12.50 from Sharika Nelvis' 12.52.

Jamaica's world and Olympic 110m hurdles champion Omar McLeod completed a hat-trick of titles in Shanghai with a time of 13.16 - equalling the best run so far this season.

Olympic champion Delilah Muhammad won the women's 400 hurdles in 53.77, barely fending off a late charge from Commonwealth champ Janieve Russell, who lost by one hundredth of a second.

The women's 3,000m steeplechase had some drama towards the end when Norah Jeruto slipped coming off the final barrier and fellow Kenyan Beatrice Chepkoech won in 9:07.27 minutes. Britain's Andrew Osagie was seventh in 1:46.36.

The African contingent dominated the men's 1,500m race where a world leading time of 3:31.48 by Timothy Cheruiyot was good enough for first, followed by Samuel Tefera (Ethiopia, 3:31.63) and Abdelaati Iguider (Morocco, 3:32.72) in the other two podium positions. Birhanu Balew of Bahrain (13:09.64) won the race, with American Paul Chelimo (13:09.66) in second.

Olympic champion Caterine Ibarguen from Colombia won the women's triple jump.

In the men's pole vault, Canada's Shawn Barber finished fifth, clearing a height of 5.61m.
