Emiratis in India warned of deadly virus

The outbreak of Nipah virus, which has resulted in the death of ten people in Kerala, is also likely to have an adverse impact on India's fruit exports. The administration in Nahan sub-division of Sirmaur district in Himachal Pradesh has geared up to curb spread of the virus, and a special meeting of officials from different departments was held.

With over 10 deaths due to the deadly Nipah virus being reported from northern Kerala, the state government had earlier issued an advisory asking travellers to avoid visiting the four districts of Kozhikode, Malappuram, Waynad and Kannur.

Apart from the 10 deaths in Kerala's Kozhikode and Mallapuram districts, some 94 people have been quarantined inside their homes while nine others are under surveillance in hospitals. This virus does not make the bats sick, which means that they coexist and have co evolved.

The Health Ministry has urged people not to panic, asserting that the outbreak is "localised" to Kerala. However, experts say the cause of the outbreak is subject of great debate. A central team has been sent to the district to help the state administration. It usually takes about five to 14 days for symptoms to show up.

By Nitindra Bandyopadhyay'Increased human interruption stresses out bats, which ups virus load'The Nipah virus outbreak that is wreaking havoc in Kerala has put the state's health and family welfare department on a high alert. The virus, which is released through bats' saliva, urine and excreta, typically spreads due to bats consuming fruits on trees. This virus first came into limelight when it caused an outbreak in humans that took place in a small village of Kampung Sungai Nipah in Malaysia in 1998 and the virus was named after this place. Intermediate hosts of this instance were found to be pigs.

There is now no vaccine for the disease. The primary treatment is intensive supportive care. Some common signs and symptoms of are headache, fever, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, neck stiffness and mental confusion. However, given the vast number of viral infections, it is recommended that you don't panic each time someone coughs or experiences respiratory problems, and instead, get a thorough check-up done. There is no vaccine for the disease and the patient can also slip into the coma within 48 hours.

The virus spreads through close contact with people's secretions and excretions.
